The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met today in his office, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, in the presence of the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Al-Sadig and the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Horn of Africa.

In a press statement, Jean-Pierre Lacroix noted that the meeting was an opportunity to thank Sudan for the support it has been providing to the UNISFA mission in Abyei region, he stressed readiness of the United Nations to provide everything that would enhance peace and stability in Abyei area, adding that the meeting tackled the positive understandings that took place between the governments of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan on the solution of the situation in the region, indicating that the UN support the constructive talks between the two countries to establish security and stability in the region.

The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Peacekeeping Operations said that the international organization is keen to support peaceful coexistence among the social components in Abyei and, is ready to provide the necessary aid and assistance to the citizens of the region within the framework of achieving the desired goal of addressing the issue by peaceful means.

He indicated that the meeting reflects the commitment of the Sudan’s Government and its keenness to support the efforts to address the situation in Abyei.
