Governor of Gedarif Renews Appeal for Support To Ethiopian Refugees

Gedarif (SUNA) – The Wali (governor) of Gedarif State, Dr. Suleiman Ali Mohamed Musa, has renewed his appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene rapidly and provide the necessary support for the Ethiopian refugees in Gedarif State.

At the regular news forum of Sudan News Agency (SUNA) Monday, the Wali (governor) said that the response has so far been slow from the side of organizations and the international community and does not rise to the size of the influxes of refugees into Gedarif State, indicating that the total number of refugees in the state has reached 15,500 refugees.

He referred to the transportation of 2,500 to Um-Rakoba Camp in Eastern Galabat locality, adding that Town 8 in Al-Fashga is hosting 13,000 refugees; 9,000 of them are children, 2,700 are women, and 1,300 of them are men.

The Wali (governor) affirmed the allocation of another camp in the Al-Tenaideba area in Mafaza Locality to accommodate the refugees, whose number exceeds those in Um-Rakoba Camp.

He said that the big influxes of Ethiopian refugees in Gedarif State will have negative on the state economically and socially and at the level of services.

He expected arrival of more influxes into state, stressing those health precautions had been made the camp of Town (8) to avoid transmission of diseases.

 The governor has called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to live up to their role in providing support to Ethiopian refugees whose number has exceeded the state’s capabilities under the current economic conditions.

He pointed to the role played by the state’s government and security committee in standing on the ground on refugees’ situation and providing governmental and popular support to them.
