Sudan receives invitation to participate in Kinshasa and Kigali summits

Prime Minister Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk has expressed Sudan’s appreciation to the support provided by the United Nations and the organization of International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR)  for combating illegal exploitation and trade in natural resources that make the Lakes region lose great potentials that could have been exploited in the development and prosperity of the region, instead of fueling conflicts around it and creating an environment of political and economic instability .

This came when the Prime Minister received today at his office the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia, and his accompanying delegation, in the presence of the Prime Minister’s Adviser for International Cooperation, Ms. Aisha Al-Barir.

The meeting came on the sidelines of participation of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region in the work of ICGLR’s workshop on Natural Resources in the Great Lakes region, held in Khartoum.

The United Nations envoy praised the steps taken by Sudan in the democratic transition, which qualifies it to play a greater regional role in the Great Lakes region.

The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region invited Sudan to participate in the upcoming Kinshasa and Kigali summits, which focus on linking peace and development, promoting the values ​​of democracy and regional cooperation in resolving the region’s issues so that Sudan plays its aspired role in the continent.

He stressed that the United Nations is currently strengthening coordination between its programs and agencies within the framework of developing an integrated regional strategy to achieve peace and development in the Great Lakes Region.
