A mission of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), arrived here coming from South Kordofan State to assess the security situation in Lagawa locality as a result of the incidents that took place last year and to discuss the issue of the return of displaced persons and the state government’s stance.

Upon the arrival the mission held a briefing meeting with the Local Security Committee, headed by Al-Bushra Mohamed Rahmatallah, Executive Director of the Lagawa Locality, in the presence of the state’s Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Mohamed Yusuf Issa.

Al-Bushra explained that the delegation heard a briefing on the security and health conditions in Lagawa locality and local arrangements for the return of the displaced persons to their homes.

He also referred to the delegation’s meeting with the leaders of the native administration of all components of the Lagawa community in addition to visiting some sites and holding meetings with youth, women and returnees to get informed on the arrangements for the return of the IDPs, which is considered a main goal of the visit.

For her part, Head of Regional Office, UNITAMS, Tomoko Kubota, stressed the need for the voluntary return of the displaced and the efforts made by the governments of West and South Kordofan States to provide the elements of return, foremost of which is the realization of security and reconciliation of the conditions of the displaced persons.

She also pointed to the necessity to reactivate community initiatives and mobilize youth and native administration in order to bring views closer and pave the way for voluntary return.
