Sudan chairs meeting of IGAD blue economy ministers

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning,  Dr. Gebriel Ibrahim, chaired Friday morning the meeting of ministers supervising the blue economy file in the IGAD countries held in Addis Ababa,  which has approved the regional strategy for the blue economy for the period 2021-2025.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning asserted the great importance of the blue economy sectors in achieving the desired transformation of the region’s countries, and the organization’s strategic vision for the year 2050, stressing positive reflection of the blue economy on the main pillars of IGAD’s work in the axes of peace and security, environmental protection and food security, Social development, and the regional cooperation and integration.

The Chairman of the IGAD Ministerial Council for the Blue Economy has called on the IGAD partners to support the region’s countries endeavours to implement the regional strategy, especially in the axes of resource mobilization, building the capacities of national and regional institutions, research and studies, strengthening coordination and coherence between the sectors of the blue economy and enhancing awareness of the importance of the blue economy sectors.

He concluded his address to the meeting with the hope that the geopolitical developments in the world would not negatively affect the IGAD countries, as

prepare to implement their regional blue economy strategy.

The Director of the Department of Sub-Regional Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Magdi Mufaddal, addressed the meeting on behalf of the Sudan’s delegation presenting the potentials of the blue economy sectors in the country, especially in the energy axes, oil and gas exploration and minerals in the Red Sea, technology and vital exploration, and the challenges facing the blue economy.

He called on regional and international partners to support the country, especially in resource mobilization, national capacity building, research and studies, strengthening blue economy governance, technology transfer and other fields.

It is worth noting that the ministerial meeting has adopted the regional strategy for the blue economy, while the member states will start developing national strategies to enhance the benefit of the blue economy sectors.
