A joint meeting was held yesterday at Garri Thermal Power Station headed by Prime Minister Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk and comprised the Ministers of Energy and Oil, Cabinet Affairs, Finance and Economic Planning and Culture and Information and discussed progress of work at the power station.
A press statement issued by the Council of Ministers on the visit explained that the Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation visited the project facilities and reviewed the details of Garri III project, its cost, implementation progress, and the obstacles that delayed the entry of the station in the electricity grid, which is expected to increase power generation by 450 megawatts.
The Prime Minister directed to expedite work in the station, intensify efforts and mobilize the necessary resources so that the station would enter into service as soon as possible.
On the activation of renewable energy sources, the Prime Minister stressed that Sudan’s reintegration in the international community and the international development community, the flow of investments in the country, and the exploitation of other development resources would enable Sudan to advance its economy and all this need achieving self-sufficiency in energy production.
He added that the best and most effective means are renewable energy sources, particularly in which our country has a preferential advantage, such as solar energy.
In this connection, it was agreed to issue a decision exempting all solar energy production inputs from customs and taxes in order to stimulate its installation and use at a cost that the citizen can bear.
The meeting agreed that renewable energy is the future of energy in Sudan and the world, especially since the price of a kilowatt of renewable energy is much lower than its counterpart that is generated by thermal energy, which depends for 70% of its price on the price of global fuel.
On the financial challenges facing the sector, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, affirmed strict commitment towards providing the resources required for maintenance operations, spare parts and fuel, to effectively and fully utilize the existing power generation structures with the aim of increasing their efficiency and thus production.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to reconsider and reform the current administrative model of the electricity sector (separate companies for generation, distribution and transmission), in order to unify the administration of the sector so that it performs its role in the required effective manner, in consultation with experts at home and abroad, and to consider the experiences of similar countries.
On addressing technical challenges, it has been emphasized that Sudan’s openness to the international community will be reflected in establishing partnerships and providing great opportunities for exchanging experiences and knowledge in a way that increases the efficiency of national cadres in this vital sector to unleash the country’s development potential.
