FM Undersecretary Meets UK Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan

The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, Ambassador Daffaalla Al Haj Ali, met at his office Tuesday  the UK Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Robert Fairweather.

The meeting tackled bilateral relations , current situation  and the role of Britain in assisting  Sudan  to achieve national accord which will pave way  to smooth democratic transition.

The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary lauded  the historical relations between the two countries and thanked the Envoy for efforts being exerted by Britain on assisting Sudan, stressing  the government’s commitment  to protect freedom of expression  by peaceful means.

The UK Envoy affirmed  importance of concerted efforts of all Sudanese parties  to overcome difficulties facing the country at this critical stage as well as importance of dialogue  for reaching  to solutions to the political crisis and achieving peace.

Ambassador Dafaalla  gave a detailed explanation about the events of Al-Fashaqa, explaining that Ethiopian forces had entered Sudanese territory and kidnapped seven Sudanese soldiers and a civilian, and executed them and mutilated their bodies, stressing  that what Ethiopia had done did not conform  with international charters and norms and the

 nature of the relationship between the two countries, and noting that the government of Sudan has a duty to defend its lands and citizens, and that Sudan is exercising   self-restraint to prevent escalation.

For his part, the UK Envoy expressed  hope to develop bilateral relations and disclosed  that Britain and the international partners would like to help the Sudanese to come  out of the current crisis, referring to  necessity of work of all  towards  reaching  consensus, which requires provision of  concessions from all parties.

The British Envoy said , reference  to  Al-Fashqa incidents, that it was not in the interest of the two countries to escalate the situation, and praised Sudan’s stance and its exercise of self-restraint to prevent an escalation.
