Abul-Gheit Affirms Arab Support to Transition Process in Sudan

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, has renewed his congratulations to Mariam Al-Saddiq Al Mahdi on her appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and praised formation of the new Sudanese government headed by Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, following the signing of the Juba peace agreement.

He stressed during his meeting Wednesday in Cairo with the Foreign Minister, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, the League’s commitment to continue its support to Sudan and its institutions and to stand alongside all the people of Sudan In order to complete the important political transition in the country.

Dr. Mariam is visiting Cairo to participate in the meetings of the Arab League’s council at the ministerial level.

Abul-Gheit discussed with Dr. Mariam a number of regional issues of common importance and renewed the league’s firm commitment to preserving the water rights of both Egypt and Sudan with regard to the Renaissance Dam file, as well as the league’s support to the efforts to reach a fair, legal and binding agreement on this issue that takes into account the interests of all the parties.

He also affirmed the Arab League’s full commitment to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan, and renewed the League’s support for all the legitimate measures taken by Sudan to extend its sovereignty and enforce its authority over all of its territories.

He expressed his hope that the existing crisis on the Sudanese-Ethiopian borders would be resolved by peaceful means and through dialogue in a manner that respects the sovereignty of Sudan over its entire territories.
