Hamdouk Discusses with ICC Prosecutor the Handing over of Genocide Suspects

The Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, received on Wednesday at the Council of Ministers the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Asad Khan, and the accompanying delegation.

The delegation’s visit to Sudan comes in the framework of the coordination and cooperation between Sudan and the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the accused persons against whom arrest warrants were issued, and the progress achieved in the cases of Sudanese citizens at the court

The Prime Minister affirmed at the meeting the government commitment to achieving justice as one of the slogans of the glorious December revolution, stating in this regard that Sudan commitment to achieve justice is not only a matter of international obligations, but rather comes in response to popular demands for the establishment of justice and the implementation of the glorious revolution’s slogans.

Hamdouk indicated that the visit of the ICC delegation is an evidence on the change resulting from the comprehensive reform processes in the new Sudan.

In a press statement, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for International Partnerships, Omer Gamar-Eddin, said that the ICC Prosecutor General has spoken at his meeting with the Prime Minister on the objectives of his visit to Sudan and the goal to provide justice services for the victims of disputes in Sudan.

He said that the ICC Prosecutor General briefed the Prime Minister on the call of the International Criminal Court for handing over a number of the accused persons, including the ousted president Omer Al-Bashir, and explained that the trial of Ali Kosheib will begin shortly after the court decision that there was sufficient evidence to bring him to trial in some crimes.

Gamar-Eddin indicated that the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court asked the Prime Minister and the government to expedite the steps for opening an office of the International Criminal Court in Sudan, and told him that he will return to Sudan after submitting his report to the UN Security Council in next December.

He noted that the Prime Minister assured the ICC Prosecutor General that Sudan will cooperate in transparency with the International Criminal Court, and that Sudan is about to sign and ratify the Rome Statute shortly.
