Guterres Affirms UN Support for Sudan

The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, met at the United Nations premises on Friday the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and reviewed the developments in Sudan and progress of the political transition process in the country and the joint efforts between the government and the United Nations to make it a success.

The President of the Sovereignty Council gave at the meeting a briefing on the overall political developments in the country, especially the affirmation on the Armed Forces’ withdrawal from the political process.

On his part, the UN Secretary General affirmed the international organization’s support for Sudan efforts towards democratic transformation, and praised the decision of the President of the Sovereign Council to keep the Armed forces away from politics.

He called on the Sudanese political forces to agree on the formation of a civilian government to lead the country during the transitional period.

Guterres has expressed his pleasure at the visit of the President of the Sovereign Council to the United Nations premises and spoken at length about his previous visits to Sudan when he was in charge of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugeespraising the tolerance of the Sudanese people and their acceptance to the others, a matter which was reflected on hosting the refugees.
