Foreign Ministry Presents Briefing to Ambassadors and Representatives of International and Regional Organizations

The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Al-Saddiq, briefed on Wednesday the ambassadors and representatives of the international and regional organizations accredited to Sudan on the political developments in the country.

In a statement to SUNA, the minister said that the briefing dealt with three main issues, which were the address of-the President of the Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, to the Sudanese nation, the results of the emergency IGAD summit that ended its work in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on Tuesday, and indications of graduating a first batch of security forces for protection of the civilians in Darfur.

Regarding Al-Burhan’s address, the minister explained that the speech decided withdrawal of the Sudanese Armed Forces from the political work represented by the mediation carried out by the tripartite mechanism which includes the United Nations, the African Union and the IGAD, a matter which means that the dialogue will be between civilians alone, who will choose the civilian prime minister who will form a government with full civilian ministers for the remainder of the transitional period.

He said that one of the main tasks of the government is the foreign policy that determines the method of Sudan relations with the world, countries and the regional and international organizations, besides the concern with enhancing

the security situation and the citizens’ living conditions.

He noted that the government, that will be formed, shall prepare for and supervise the general elections and coordinate in the monitoring with the regional and international organizations, and then comes the handing over of power to the parties that win in the elections.

On the recent 39th IGAD extraordinary summit in Nairobi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that it has tackled the challenges facing the region as regard peace and security, achieving development, drought, and the food crisis in the IGAD countries, besides the repercussions of coronavirus pandemic.

He said that the speech given by Gen. Al-Burhan has affirmed the importance of coordinating efforts and expanding the scope of cooperation and coordination between the member states for achieving peace, stability and the welfare of the peoples in the region.

He indicated that the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the IGAD summit with the Presidents of Kenya and Djibouti and the Ethiopian Prime Minister and discussed ways of

consolidating Sudan relations and cooperation with their respective countries.

The minister referred to the statement issued by the IGAD summit which appreciated Sudan chairmanship of the organization and the efforts and initiatives being made by the Sudanese presidency for boosting the cooperation between the countries and peoples of the region.

He also pointed to the decision of the IGAD Summit that Sudan shall be the headquarters of the IGAD Center for Health Emergencies.

With regard to the graduation of a first batch of security forces for protection of the civilians in Darfur, the minister stated that this process is a fruit of the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan, especially with regard to the security arrangements clause, explaining that the mission of the forces is to keep security, protect the civilians, and to assist the displaced persons return to their home areas and to secure the cultivation season and to open the paths of nomadic shepherds.
