FM Participates in COVID-19 implications conference

Foreign Minister, Dr. Mariam Al-Sadig Al-Mahdi participated, Wednesday, in the meeting of the Foreign Ministers on the implications of the CVOVID-129 Pandemic on Women and girls , specially, what concerns human trafficking.

The meeting which was organized by the Spanish and Australian Foreign Ministers was attended by a number of countries including Belgium, Bulgaria, Norway, Kenya, Australia and South Africa to discuss the cooperation and partnership to work out strategy for protection of wom3en and girls against the negative impacts of the COVID-19 implications.

The minister thanked the Spanish and Australian Foreign Ministers for their pioneering role to empower women and and arrange the meeting which brought together all the Foreign Ministers to unify their visions and efforts to face the challenges of the pandemic

Dr. Mariam tackled the repercussions of the pandemic on the most affected groups in society, such as women, refugees and displaced persons, as well as the exacerbation of poverty and the increase in social gender-based violence, stressing the need for states, organizations and individuals to work together to contain these repercussions.

She also reviewed the efforts of the Government of Sudan to combat human trafficking, especially since Sudan’s geographical location is open to seven countries facing conflicts and economic challenges, making it more vulnerable to illegal immigration, through the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking and the concerned ministries.

The minister expressed the Government of Sudan’s aspiration to cooperate with all institutions and organizations working in this field, especially in training and building the capacity of workers to monitor borders in identifying victims, as well as establishing a coordination mechanism between the countries of the region to combat the phenomenon.
