ESCWA reiterates its support for poverty reduction policies in Sudan

The delegation of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) concluded its visit Thursday to the country with a meeting with the Commission for Social Security, Solidarity and Poverty Reduction.

 

The meeting discussed the various dimensions of providing technical and institutional support to social service institutions, especially the Commission for Social Security, Solidarity and Reduction Poverty, in its integrated program to eradicate poverty in the long term.

 

The commissioner of the Commission for Social Security, Solidarity and Poverty Reduction Izz-Eddin Muhammad Ahmed Al-Safi explained that the support would focus on various surveys to assess multidimensional poverty in Sudan.

 

For his part, the ESCWA Economic and Social Adviser affirmed their readiness to support the Commission for Social Security, Solidarity and Poverty Reduction in reducing poverty in Sudan, expressing his pleasure at the meeting with the delegations of UNICEF, the United Nations Development Program and the University of Oxford to support the measurement of multidimensional poverty in Sudan, which will be according to a plan in collaboration with the Commission, reiterating their support to the policies on poverty reduction in the country in the coming period.

 

It is worth mentioning that the ESCWA delegation was briefed, during its three-day visit, on the various social protection programs in Sudan. This was made when it met with the Minister of Social Development, the Director General of Health Insurance, the Secretary General of the Zakat Chamber and the representatives of diplomatic missions including the United Nations Deputy Resident

Coordinator, Deputy Director of the United Nations Development Program and Social Protection Officer of the United Nations Children’s Program.

The delegation also met with the representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Director General of the Central Bureau of Statistics.
