The Executive Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Ms. Samantha Power, has begun her visit to Sudan by Darfur region, where she met the Wali (governor) of North Darfur State, and received a briefing on the situation in the state.
Ms. Power said that Sudan is a country that seeks to establish a democratic system led by civilians after the brave Sudanese people removed the dictatorial regime from power.
She tweeted in her Twitter account that she came to Sudan for the purpose of meeting with the country’s leaders and civil society organizations that are leading this movement towards a democratic system to explore ways to strengthen the Sudanese-American partnership.
Power noted that she visited Sudan in 2004 to investigate the genocide in Darfur, which was carried out by a regime whose grip on power seemed unshakable, adding that she did not imagine at the time that Sudan would one day be able to become an inspiring model for the world that there is no leader who can not be overthrown by people.
She said that thanks to the revolution led by the people, young men and women, the country to which I return now is on its way to democracy, and I look forward to conveying what I see and what I learn from a people, despite the economic difficulties they are facing, but they refuse to give up the aspiration for a prosperous future.
It is noteworthy that Power’s visit, which began in Sudan today (Saturday), will continue until August 4, before leaving to Ethiopia.
The USAID explained in a press release that Ms. Power will address during her visit to Sudan the strengthening the US government’s partnership with Sudan’s transitional leaders and the citizens, and explore ways to expand the USAID support for Sudan’s civilian-led democratic transition.
The press release stated that Ms. Power will meet with Sudanese leaders and will focus in her speech with the Sudanese authorities on the addressing the promising and fragile transitional situation, and will emphasize the essential role of the civil society, the independent media and the brave Sudanese people who revolted for freedom.
The press release indicated that Power’s visit program includes a meeting with the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, and other officials in the transitional government.
The USAID said that Ms. Power will meet with the Ethiopian refugees in Sudan, who have recently fled “conflict and atrocities in the Tigray region,” and will travel to Darfur region to assess USAID humanitarian programs in assisting conflict-displaced people and to meet with the Darfuri youth and civil society leaders.
