Sudan and WB hold joint talks

Khartoum,  (SUNA) – Joint talks between Sudan and the World Bank co-chaired by the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk and the President of the WB Group, David Malpass held, Thursday at the Council of Ministers.

Dr. Hamdouk addressing the session, described the visit of the WB President to Sudan the which comes at a time when Sudan is undergoing similar major transformations, the glorious December Revolution that changed Sudan’s image once and for all, as “historical and symbolic “and big support to the Transitional Period in the country.

The Prime Minister explained the process of the democratic transition in the country, telling Malpss that his visit to Sudan comes at a time the country undergoes complicated situation, calling for mobilization of international support to overcome the problems facing the transition and making a success this Sudanese model despite the different complications of the transition.

The Prime Minister pointed out the development of the peace process in the country, stressing that the government has completed the first phase of the peace process and is moving at a rapid pace to complete the second phase with comrades in the People’s Movement led by Abdel Aziz Al-Hilo and the Sudan Liberation Army movement led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nour, explaining that any progress in the economic field becomes meaningless unless there is the necessary support from the World Bank and international partners to implement the peace agreement.

He described the economic reforms carried out by the government as hard and difficult but necessary, stressing the beginning of the emergence of “light at the end of the tunnel” represented in the emergence of the initial results of these reforms in the stability of the exchange rate, low inflation, and the restoration of the economy to its ability to grow positively.

The WB President, during the talks affirmed the detailed explanation presented by Dr. Hamdouk, adding that the WB has been cooperating with Sudan a while ago.

Malpass has affirmed that the international community will support Sudan in various areas, explaining that that Sudan’s access to the decision-making point with regard to the initiative of Heavily Indebted Poor Countries during this short period was unusual, and had never happened anywhere.

He said that the World Bank would work with the Government, the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank on issues such as addressing the budget deficit.
