Foreign Minister Backs home from successful visits to New York and Moscow

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq and the accompanying delegation arrived back home Thursday evening after visiting New York and Moscow.

In New York the Minister addressed UN Security Council extraordinary sitting which held on 9th of July 2021, on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam upon a request from Sudan.

The Sudanese delegation held meetings with UN Security Council Member States prior to the UNSC sitting.

The delegation presented a detailed briefing of Sudan stance regarding the development of the Renaissance Dam case and requested the council to support Sudan based on the UN Security’s protective role in preserving security, peace and stability in the region.

Dr. Mariam on her part discussed a number of issues related to Sudan with UN Secretary General and explained the stance of Sudan on Renaissance Dam.

The Minister requested UN Secretary General to play a great role on Renaissance Dam issue.

She pointed  out  that UNSC supported Sudan stance based on sharing identical viewpoints mentioned in the statement of the Chairman  of  the council particularly  his call for resumption of negotiations  and  the return of  the tripartite parties to negotiating table under  the umbrella  of AU  in order  to reach an  agreement with specific timeframe .

She said the council also called on for refrain from unilateral steps or any act and statements that could abort the negotiation process.

The Minister went on to say that the convening of the sitting of UNSC itself represents a victory to Sudan.

This according to the Minister means that the council recognizes an existence of a problem. Dr. Mariam predicted that the council may find out a solution in days that enhances the meeting and solve problems presented by Sudan.

After all Dr. Mariam affirmed that Sudan is not opposing Ethiopia’s rights in utilizing Blue Nile River resources.

But she said that Sudan just wants that right be according to an agreement that makes Ethiopia benefits from the Renaissance Dam and that Sudan be protected from being harmed during filling and operational processes.

In Moscow Dr. Mariam visit lasted three – day and it covered all bilateral cooperation aspects in favor of mutual interests between Sudan and Russia particularly in economic political and cultural fields.
