FM discusses with IGAD counterparts crisis of SPLM-IO

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of IGAD Council of Ministers, Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, has made phone calls to the foreign ministers of the IGAD countries, on the developments of the crisis between the factions of the SPLM-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) in the Republic of South Sudan, within the framework of distinguished relations Between Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan and the strong ties between the two countries and their peoples, and within the framework of Sudan’s presidency of the IGAD.

The consultations of the Minister of Foreign Affairs included Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya Raychelle  Omamo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia Mohamed Abdel Razak, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Sudan Beatrice Khamisa Wani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda Jeje Odongo and the Executive Secretary of IGAD Workneh Gebeyehu.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the seriousness of these developments, especially after the outbreak of military clashes between these factions, and the need to contain them immediately.

The ministers agreed on the need to move urgently with all stakeholders for an immediate ceasefire and to pave the way for a peaceful solution to differences through dialogue.

They stressed the centrality of the revitalized peace agreement to sustain peace in the Republic of South Sudan and the need for all parties to abide by it and speed up the implementation of the articles that have not been implemented.

The ministers agreed to intensify consultations between them on developments in the situation and to hold an emergency virtual meeting of the IGAD Ministerial Council tomorrow, Monday.
