Dr. Mariam Meets President of Democratic Republic of Congo

The Foreign Minister, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, was received Monday by the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo and president of the African Union, Félix Tshisekedi, and conveyed to him a verbal message from the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, and the greetings of the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan.

Dr. Mariam has affirmed Sudan keenness to strengthen its relations with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She expressed Sudan confidence on the ability of President Félix Tshisekedi to lead the African Union in its current session and to deal seriously and in responsibility with the Renaissance Dam’s file and to sponsor the negotiations.

The minister indicated that Sudan gives the issue of the second filling of the Renaissance Dam the utmost concern, as it is a national security issue that threatens the lives of the Sudanese living on the banks of the Blue Nile, stressing the need to reach a comprehensive and binding legal agreement between the three countries regarding the rules for filling and operating the dam before next June.

On his part, President Tshisekedi, who is the current president of the African Union, expressed his understanding of Sudan’s position and its clear demands, affirming that he will exert every effort to find a solution to the crisis in a way that achieves security and stability in the region.
