Armed Forces: We support the people’s options

The Deputy Chief of Staff- Administration  Lt. Gen. Munawar Osman Nugud has said that the Armed Forces do not seek to rule, neither during the transitional period nor after it, calling on the components of the Sudanese people to hold dialogue and agree on the national principles to establish a democratic government that serves transformation.

Nugud, addressing today the first methodological symposium on the impact of governance systems in Sudan on civil-military relations, organized by the Chief of Staff at the Nimeiri Military Academy, stressed that the armed forces are vigilant against any coup attempt and that they support the people’s options of freedom, peace and justice, noting that there are two available opportunities, namely consensus or elections to get out of the crisis and stop the deterioration that the Sudanese people are suffering from.

He said that everyone should understand that democracy is the optimum system of government for Sudan, calling on the media to raise awareness of the Sudanese people on the concept of democracy in preparation for a bright future, noting that the Armed Forces’ doors are open to the media, directing the Information Department of the Armed Forces to the

need to open up to public opinion.

For his part, Maj. Gen. Motasim Abbas Al-Tom, the Director of Nimeiri Higher Military Academy, said that the academic and methodological courses that are organized by the academy to discuss some current political issue incarnate the role that the academy plays in the field of national security and stability.

Meanwhile, the symposium made a host of recommendations including, inviting all political components and parties to negotiate and reach a political solution in a specified period of time as well as arranging and heading towards the polling stations and agreeing on free elections under the supervision of a national committee of independents with the help of neutral international committees for monitoring, and to postpone the issue of consensus until after the elected government.
