Amnesty International: Peace Agreement Must Fulfill Aspirations of Dignity and Justice

Khartoum (SUNA) – Amnesty International has described the peace agreement signed between the Sudan’s government and the Sudanese Revolutionary Front as “a ray of hope for millions of Sudanese in Darfur, South Kordufan and Blue Nile, whose human rights were systematically violated by the government of former President Omer al-Bashir, and those who were subjected to various types of horrific violence in Sudan in the past”.

The organization has pointed in a press release released Tuesday 1st September that the agreement signed by the government with the SRF that includes nine political and armed groups from various parts of the country, and the states of Blue Nile, Darfur and South Kordufan, failed to join Abdul Aziz Al-Hilu and Abdul Wahid Mohammed Nour whom are basic elements in the armed movements in Sudan.

Amnesty International’s Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Debrose Muchina, referred to the armed movements that did not sign the agreement, which could impede its success, calling on all signatories to fulfill the requirements of implementing the agreement.

He asserted that the parties to the peace agreement must make every effort to achieve a lasting peace that brings justice and stability to the country, and that the Sudanese government should work for including and engage other stakeholder groups, including the displaced and civil society for providing solutions to the multiple challenges the Sudan is facing.

Indicating priority of addressing the historical absence of accountability and justice over the human rights violations committed during the deadly conflicts since independence, and recently during the tenure of Omer al-Bashir, which has reinforced impunity on punishment in the country.

The press release has noted to the joining of most of the conflicting parties to the agreement, and the Sudan’s government obligation to ensure the conduction of that comprehensive, effective and impartial investigations into allegations of gross violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law committed by members of the country’s armed forces and their allies, including the militias as well as the crimes committed by the armed opposition groups.

The press release went of emphasize that the government of Sudan must achieve stability, justice and accountability in order to put the Sudan on the recovery path.
