Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi has affirmed the deep-rooted Sudanese-Russian relations, which enjoy great concern from all components of the Sudanese government, both military and civil, in an integrated manner formulated by the Council of Partners according to the interests of Sudan, and in a manner that the Sudan is a country that has relations with all countries of the world that preserve the interests of the Sudanese people.
Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, speaking at a joint press conference with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, held in Moscow yesterday, expressed her happiness with the visit, which came at the invitation of the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressing that the relations between Sudan and Russia have continued stable and sustainable through the various changes that have occurred in the two countries for more than 65 years.
She expressed appreciation to Russia’s support for the government of the revolution which came as a result of a great revolution led by the youth and the Sudanese people and in which women assumed advanced role.
The Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs explained that it was agreed that the joint higher committee on political consultations and economic committee would resume their activities to activate all relations between the two countries.
She expressed appreciation for the support provided by Russia to Sudan, expecting that a memorandum of understanding would be signed between the finance ministers of the two countries to relief Russia’s debt to Sudan, after it reached the decision point in the HIPC initiative.
Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi indicated that they discussed areas of cooperation and mutual support at the United Nations, appreciating the support that Sudan found from Russia in the areas presented at the Security Council and the United Nations.
She went on to say that “we thank and appreciate Russia for what the permanent representative in the Security Council said about the necessity of not allowing unilateral measures that harm any country regarding the Renaissance Dam.”
The Sudanese minister said that they discussed joint cooperation to bring peace and security to Africa in general.
For his part, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov called for lifting UN Security Council sanctions on Sudan, in order to open new horizons for the country, stressing his country’s support for the Sudanese efforts during the transitional period.
At the joint press conference with his Sudanese counterpart, Lavrov said that Russia stands with the need to lift the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council on Sudan since 2004, to open new horizons for Sudan, stressing the need for the international community to adhere to respecting the UN Charter and not resorting to double standards in settling various regional issues in the Middle East and the African continent and the best thing is to resort to dialogue and peace.
