The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the African Union’s decision to appoint the former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, as the African Union’s High Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
The ministry expressed its hope that the appointment of Obasanjo would be a step in the way of enhancing peace, security, stability and political dialogue in the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Sudan, in its capacity as the current president of IGAD, stresses that confrontation of the great challenges facing the Horn of Africa requires genuine partnership between the African Union and IGAD, in implementation of the principle of complementary efforts between the African Union and regional economic organizations and groups in the field of peace and security.
The ministry stated that Sudan looks forward to joint work and close and effective coordination with the African Union and the High Envoy for the Horn of Africa to complement the efforts initiated by the Prime Minister and President of IGAD, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, to face the current challenges in the region.
