announced that the head of the mission, Volker Perthes, would leave this week for Juba, the capital of South Sudan, before the coming peace talks scheduled on May 25 between Sudan transitional government and Sudan People’s Movement – faction of Abdul-Aziz Al-Hillo.
UNITAMS stated that the head of the mission will meet with the mediation team of the Republic of South Sudan and the People’s Liberation Movement – faction of Abdul-Aziz Al-Hillo and other parties.
Perthes has appreciated the mediation role of South Sudan for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in Sudan, indicating that role has already been recognized by the Security Council in the Resolution 2524, commending both Sudan government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (Al-Hillo faction) for their commitment, as stipulated in the Declaration of Principles. signed in March, to engage, constructively to accelerate the achievement of a peace settlement.
He hoped that the next phase of these negotiations will encourage all remaining non-signatories to participate in good faith with the Sudanese authorities to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in Sudan that addresses the root causes and effects of the conflicts and helps forming a more representing transitional government in Sudan that reflects all aspirations of the revolution.
Perthes stressed that UNITAMS and the other partners are committed to support the negotiation process, the implementation of the Juba agreement for peace in Sudan and future agreements and the political transition in Sudan according to the Security Council resolution 2524.
