Foreign Ministry Welcomes Visit of African Peace and Security Council Members

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the visit of members of the African Peace and Security Council and the Chairperson of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Commission of the African Union, scheduled during March 30 – April 1, 2021, and during which the delegation will meet with the political and partisan leaders and the civil society organizations, and will also visit North Darfur State and meet state governors of Darfur states and visit the UNAMID headquarters and the internally displaced persons camps.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out in a press statement that the delegation’s visit aims to identify developments in the country, the challenges facing the transitional period and to affirm the solidarity of the African Union and the African Peace and Security Council in particular with the Sudanese people and their government, and to express full commitment to support the transitional period in Sudan.

The statement indicated that the visit is considered an important one as it comes at a time when important developments that have been achieved during the past period, especially in the peace file, and start of the implementation of the peace agreement by formation of the Peace Partners Council and the transitional government which included the signatories of the Juba Peace Agreement, in addition to the removing of Sudan from the list of states sponsoring terrorism, and the various economic and governance reforms and preparation of the political environment for the transition for the sustainable democratic governance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed its appreciation of the coordination and fruitful cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations to ensure a gradual, safe and smooth exit of the UNAMID mission, besides the solidarity and coordination for success of the tasks of the United Nations Integrated Transition Support Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), toward creating a favorable atmosphere for a successful transition from the peace-keeping phase to the stage of peace-building, which is one of the most important pillars of the successful transition to democratic governance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has praised the important and leading role that the African Peace and Security Council and the African Union and its organs have continued to play through their role and effective contribution to supporting the stability in the country.

The ministry stressed that Sudan looks forward to continuing coordination and cooperation with the African Peace and Security Council to face the challenges facing the transition process in Sudan and to support to the implementation of the peace agreement and the government plans for re-building and reconstruction.
