Foreign Minister Phones her Irish Counterpart

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, made a phone call to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, Simon Coveney,

The two ministers affirmed the deeply-rooted relations between the Sudan and Ireland and their progress in light of the mutual keenness to strengthen those relations and promote them to meet the common interests.

They also discussed means of consolidating the bilateral relations between the two countries, besides the situation in the Horn of Africa in general, and the role of Sudan in its capacity as head of IGAD for achieving stability in the region.

The two ministers also reviewed the Irish experience and ways to benefit from it, especially in the fields of investment, marketing, women, youth and good governance, by providing training opportunities in some important fields such as medicine, diplomacy and others, in addition to establishing partnerships between Sudanese and Irish universities.

The Irish minister renewed his invitation to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Ireland.

On her part, the Foreign Minister expressed thanks to Ireland for its support to the democratic transition process in Sudan, and its strong commitment to support the political and economic transformation in Sudan.

She also expressed the deep appreciation, thanks and gratitude of Sudan and the Prime Minister to Ireland for its contribution to the process of writing off Sudan arrears at the African Development Bank through a bridge loan, explaining that this step will greatly help Sudan benefiting from debt relief through the HIPC initiative, and getting new financing from the African Development Bank for several projects.

Dr. Mariam has given a detailed briefing to the Irish Foreign Minister on the political and economic developments represented in Sudan readiness for peace, focusing on the next round of the peace negotiations, scheduled for May 24, in addition to the changes in policies and laws, the structural reform, approval of the overall strategy to combat poverty, ratification of laws such as the Investment Act etc., pointing to the readiness of Sudan government to sign the UNITAMS headquarters’ agreement.
