Foreign Minister Meets US Envoy for the Horn of Africa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, Saturday received in her office the US special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, and discussed the strategic directions of Sudan in the region, the file of the Renaissance Dam, the border tensions with Ethiopia and ways to reduce tension in the Horn of Africa.

The minister has welcomed the US envoy and gave a detailed briefing on Sudan position on the tripartite negotiations, especially the last round held in last April in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She explained that Sudan is looking forward to reaching a binding legal agreement in which all parties will win before proceeding to the second filling.

She also reviewed Sudan vision of involving the international community under the leadership of the African Union in the negotiations due to the lack of political will on the Ethiopian side.

On his part, the US envoy affirmed the United States’ support for Sudan to lead an effective role in establishing peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

Feltman has shown a deep understanding of Sudan position, and stressed that it is important that the negotiations shall be conducted under the umbrella of the African Union with the involvement of the international community and improving the negotiation mechanism to ensure effectiveness and results
