Foreign Minister Chairs Emergency Ministerial Meeting of IGAD

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, Monday chaired the virtual emergency ministerial meeting of the IGAD countries to discuss the developments of the crisis between the factions of the People’s Movement at the opposition in the sisterly Republic of South Sudan.

The minister thanked the IGAD foreign ministers, the international partners of the Troika, the European Union and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), for their keenness to achieving peace and stability in the region and reactivating IGAD leading role in resolving the crises in the region, and their quick response to the emergency session to find urgent solutions to contain the crisis.

She expressed Sudan concern over the recent events between the SPLM opposition factions, stressing the seriousness of these incidents and the need to find friendly solutions in order to avoid the impacts of these incidents on the peace and stability of the brotherly people of South Sudan.

The chairperson of the IGAD ministerial council called on all parties to stop the fighting immediately and to resort to peaceful means to find solutions for their differences without dragging the country into another civil war that does not serve the interest of any party.

She affirmed Sudan unlimited support, in its capacity as IGAD President, to implement the revitalized peace agreement to resolve the conflict in South Sudan.

She announced that the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, will visit Juba in the coming days to discuss with the leaders of the Republic of South Sudan the ways to contain the crisis, enhance the confidence between the peace parties and to implement the clauses of the revitalized peace agreement.
