Khartoum, (SUNA) – Member of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has affirmed the importance of keeping security and safety of the displaced persons inside their camps, stressing the need for UNAMID to intensify its efforts to protect civilians in Darfur.
Lt. Gen. Daglo said during his meeting Wednesday with the Wali (governor) of South Darfur State, Maj. Gen. Hashim Khalid, and representatives of UNAMID mission, that there was a clear failure of the UNAMID to protect the civilians in the camps, referring to the events of Kalma camp on April 16, in which many citizens were killed.
He indicated that the Rapid Support Forces have attempted to intervene in Kalma displaced camp to prevent casualties and to protect the displaced persons, but the UNAMID mission managed to obstruct this attempt, a matter that resulted in great losses in lives and properties.
The Rapid Support Forces’ Commander stressed the need to address all security-related issues in the displacement camps by the UNAMID according to its mandate, noting that the Rapid Support Forces are undertaking enormous tasks in boosting the social fabric and enhancing the peaceful coexistence between all the social components in Darfur, as well as the role that the Rapid Support Forces are currently engaged in securing the agricultural season in the states of Darfur and the normalization of the relations between the nomads and farmers.
SUNA learned that the budget of the UNAMID mission during the period from July 2018 to June 2019 was $ 385,678,500, but it has not been able to fulfill its mandated responsibilities throughout a period of 13 years.
