Complaints on Lack of Services To Ethiopian Refugees at Hamdayit Reception Camp

Kassala (SUNA) – The Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees in Sudan has acknowledged during his inspection visit to the Ethiopian refugees at Hamdayit area, accompanied by a representative of Kassala State’s government the difficulty of situation under existence the big numbers of Ethiopian refugees.

 He said that his visit to the reception camp has revealed the situation and aimed to identify the conditions of the Refugees prior to arranging for transporting them to Um-Rakoba camp in Kassala State.

He called on the organizations and supporting bodies to continue providing aid to the refugees and to respond to requirements of their expected numbers, referring to the steps taken by the communities at the area and other circles in providing assistance to the Ethiopian refugees in the first stage in a time when the Ethiopian refugees at Hamdayit area in Wad Al-Hilaiu Locality have complained from deterioration and lack of the services given to them, especially the shortage in water, food and shelter.

One of the refugees in the camp said that large numbers had arrived at the camp escaping the effects of the war taking place in Tigray region between the government army and the Liberation Front of Tigray Region without having much aid, Indicating that there are other numbers of Ethiopians on their way to Sudanese lands who are in need for health care, especially the children, the sick and the elders.

He praised the initiative of the people and citizens of Hamdayit area and their quick response to present what they could provide, adding that However, the actual need to meet the requirements of refugees necessitates urgent intervention of the international organizations to deal with the influxes flowing due to the war.

On his part, the representative of the Governor of Kassala State explained that the humanitarian situation is very critical, a matter that requires all organizations and communities to stand together in this ordeal, appreciating the help extended to the refugees by the local community at Hamdayit area in a way that showed the inherited values of the solidarity in the Sudanese community.

The representative of the Governor’s Advisor for Organizations Affairs, Ishraqa Abdul-Halim, appealed to the organizations and various agencies to expedite the relief of refugees and to meet their urgent needs for meals, clothing and accommodation.

The representative of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society in the reception camp, Mohamed Omer Salih, has stressed the necessity to provide therapeutic medicines well as other needs to the refugees as quickly as possible, pointing to the positive stance of the youth, the cadres of the society and the citizens towards the refugees and their reception.
