Assistant Undersecretary of Ministry Reviews Government Efforts in Enhancing Human Rights Situation

Khartoum,  (SUNA) – The Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ilham Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, reviewed in her address before the Geneva-based Council of Human Rights the efforts exerted by the transitional government for enhancing the situation of human rights in Sudan.

She said that Sudan’s signing of the Conventions against Torture and the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance represents an obligation to the previous commitments made by Sudan to join international human rights conventions, referring in this regard to the legal amendments adopted by the government on the articles relating to violation of the rights of women and children and the freedom of religion and belief.

She affirmed Sudan commitment to cooperate with the Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and all regional and international human rights mechanisms in order to complete the steps undertaken by the transitional government, and to achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people for the establishment and sustainability of a state of democracy and good governance that upholds their dignity, guarantees their rights and ensures the provision of security, stability and a decent life for them.

The Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-Nashif, and the head of UNITAMS, Volker Perthes, have participated in the sitting and presented two statements in which they appreciated the ongoing reforms and assured the UN support to the transitional stage in confronting the challenges it is facing.

As a result of the intensive movements and efforts undertaken by Sudan permanent mission in Geneva, the Human Rights Council did not consider this year any decision submitted on the human rights situation in Sudan, for the first time since 1993,  a matter which represents recognition by the international community of the efforts of the transitional government in strengthening the human rights situation in the country after the glorious December revolution.
