Al-Burhan Receives US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa

The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, has praised the progressing level of Sudanese-American relations and the American positions in support of the government of the transitional period.

Gen. Al-Burhan received in his office on Saturday the envoy of the US President to the Horn of African, Jeffrey Feltman, and discussed ways to promote the joint cooperation between Sudan and the United States in various fields, welcoming the appointment of Mr. Feltman as special envoy of the US President for the Horn of Africa, and congratulated him on the position.

He affirmed during the meeting the importance of cooperation and coordination between Sudan and the United States, especially in the major issues of Sudan that require international and regional coordination in order to maintain international peace and security.

Al-Burhan gave to the US envoy a general briefing on the Renaissance Dam file, and assured Sudan firm position on the negotiated solution to the differences between the source and the downstream countries and the need for joint coordination between the three countries.

 The President of the Sovereignty Council stressed the need to reach an agreement between the three countries on issues of the filling and operation of the dam.

 Regarding the situation at the borders between Sudan and Ethiopia, the President of the Sovereignty Council stated that the recent deployment of the Armed Forces took place within the Sudanese territories, which were approved by Ethiopia on a number of occasions and determined by the historical agreements, indicating that only the setting of border marks between the two countries has remained.

Al-Burhan affirmed Sudan readiness to cooperate with Ethiopia in resolving its internal issues based on good neighborly relations between the two countries.

He called on the United States to stand alongside the transitional government and to support it in facing the challenges of the transitional period.

On his part, the US envoy for the Horn of Africa stressed the importance of Sudan, the Horn of Africa and the security of the Red Sea to the United States, calling on Sudan to support him to make his mission a success.

 During his meeting with the President of the Sovereignty Council, the US envoy referred to the history of Sudanese-American relations, which he described as old and deeply-rooted relations.
