Al-Burhan Receives Envoys of United States and European Union

The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, received in his office at the Republican Palace Monday the congratulations from the US envoy for peace in Sudan, Donald Booth, and the European Union’s envoy in Khartoum, Robert Van Dool, on behalf of the European Union’s special envoy, Alexander Rondos, on the signing of the Declaration of Principles Monday between the transitional period government and the People’s Movement – North led by Abdul-Aziz Al-Hillu, in Juba, capital of the Republic of South Sudan.

The meeting discussed the peace process in Sudan, the differences between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia over the Renaissance Dam and the developments on Sudan’s eastern borders with Ethiopia.

At the meeting, the President of the Sovereignty Council renewed Sudan initial commitment to the peaceful and diplomatic solutions for the controversial issues with Ethiopia.

He pointed out that the opening of the Armed Forces in Fashaqa area took place inside the Sudanese territories, in accordance with the 1902 agreement and what was confirmed by the subsequent understandings with the Ethiopian side.

Al-Burhan called on the United States and the European Union to contribute to bolstering the peace process in Sudan and to reach a joint agreement on the Renaissance Dam file.

The US envoy, Donald Booth, and the envoy of the European Robert Van Dool, expressed their readiness to mediate in the issue of the Renaissance Dam, and affirmed their belief in the need to reach a diplomatic solution to the dispute over the dam according to an approach that satisfies the three parties and which guarantees Ethiopia’s enjoyment of electricity, and ensures the territorial integrity of Sudan and the safety of its dams guarantees the water rights of Egypt.

The two envoys praised the leadership of the President of the Sovereignty Council for the stage and his success in reaching a solution to the peace issue, referring to the breakthrough achieved on Sunday by the signing the Declaration of Principles with the SPLM-North that would pave the way for achieving a comprehensive peace in Sudan.

On his part, the European Union’s envoy affirmed the EU readiness to support the economic reforms taking place in Sudan and to contribute to implementation of the government project for support to the poor families.
