UN and International Organization Express Readiness to Assist Displaced Persons at Sortony Camp

The Wali (governor) of North Darfur State, Nimir Mohamed Abdul-Rahman, has called on the United Nations agencies and the international organizations operating in the state to intervene urgently to provide shelter, food and medical assistance for the displaced people in Sortony Camp in Kabkabiya locality who were affected by the security incidents in the camp last week.

The spokesman of the state’s government, Khalil Musa Hassan, said in a press statement after the meeting held on Saturday between the Wali (governor) and directors and representatives of the international agencies and organizations, that the Wali (governor) has given a comprehensive review on the nature and size of the incidents at Sortony Camp which affected more than 30,000 displaced persons who are now needy for urgent shelter and food and medical aid.

Hassan said that the state’s Wali (governor) assured at the meeting the stability and calmness of the situation at the displaced camp, referring to seriousness of the local authorities to return life at the camp to normalcy.

Meanwhile, the Regional Director of the High Commission for Refugees in Darfur, Toppy Hard, stressed that all the agencies and organizations are ready to provide humanitarian and service assistance to the displaced people of Sortony camp, in coordination with the state’s government to alleviate the impacts of the accident and to improve their humanitarian conditions
