Hamdouk: Sit-in Dispersal was Criminal Event, with Treacherous Hand behind it

The Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, Wednesday issued a statement on the violent dispersal of the civilian sit-in in front of the General Command in 2019, describing it as a criminal event behind which was committed by treachery hands to assassinate tens of civilian martyrs.

He described that event as a crime and a wound that will not heal unless justice is achieved and criminals are brought to justice. Hamdouk pointed to the repeated incidents of assault on activists and resistance youth during the last period, and the recurrent assaults on peaceful demonstrators on the 29th of last Ramadan, when innocent youths fell victim to these attacks, stressing that the government is determined to work seriously to reveal the details of these cases.

Hamdouk noted that justice remained one of the major slogans of the December revolution, affirming that the determination to redressing of grievances and retribution for the victims of brutal repression and mass killing in Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, the Blue Nile, northern and eastern Sudan, and every part of Sudan in which the former regime has perpetrated its evil and criminality.

He pointed out that the government has placed the issue of achieving justice at the top of its concerns and formed the Independent Investigation Committee in application of one of the provisions of the Constitutional Document, and investigated a number of martyrs’ cases, some of which have reached the courts that are now taking place in Al-Obeid, Rabak, Atbara, Khartoum and Al-Hasahisa. Explaining that verdicts have been issued in a number of these case while the rest of files are pending for the purpose of collecting evidence and presenting coherent cases to the Judiciary, so that criminals do not escape accountability.

Hamdouk said that the government has welcomed the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and opened the door for negotiations since the start of the government formation, stating that the government is deliberating with the ICC and the communities of victims on the best ways to bring the internationally wanted defendants before this court.

He indicated that the government is also working to expedite formation of the Transitional Justice Commission, which is one of the means that modern societies have known to achieve justice in cases where it is difficult to use ordinary means of justice, adding the commission will work to conduct an extensive dialogue on the Transitional Justice Law, so that it meets the aspirations of the victims and their communities and be able to achieve the essence of justice.
