Al-Burhan: Participation of Displaced People in Negotiations is Essential

Khartoum, (SUNA) – The President of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, has stressed the importance of accountability for any one who committed a crime in Darfur, particularly against Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Addressing representatives of displaced people camps in Darfur, Lt. Gen. Al-Burhan pointed out on Friday that the issue would be possible to be handled by the International Criminal Court (ICC) if those involved in crimes were not held accountable by the national couts

He said that the Sudanese people shall apologize to the displaced people, stressing the importance of restoring their rights and returning them voluntarily to their home villages.

The participation of the displaced persons in the negotiation platform in Juba will be essential until a complete peace is achieved, given that the displaced represent themselves and negotiate their own issues for the sake of their rights.

Meanwhile, the displaced people demanded their participation in Juba negotiations to achieve comprehensive peace and to meet their aspirations, affirming the necessity of providing security and imposing the state sovreignty in collecting firearms.

They praised the efforts of the Rapid Support Forces in providing security and reducing crimes.

The Director of the General Administration of Displaced Camps in Darfur States, Dr. Salih Eissa Abbakar, has affirmed the displaced persons’ readiness to engage in the negotiation, and called for moving the negotiations to inside Sudan to allow participation of all the displaced people to participate.

He said that the previous agreements concluded between the former regime and the armed movements were considered partial peace, because they did not include the issues of the displaced people who are the stakeholders, calling for their representation in all the negotiating platforms.
